SPRINGVILLE — The Springville City Council met Tuesday night, September 6, for the first regular meeting of the month. Due to the Labor Day holiday, the meeting was rescheduled from the usual first Monday.
During the lengthy agenda, Springville Fire Chief Richard Harvey spoke to the Council about three firefighters who have recently completed important training.
“I just really wanted to say publicly thank you very much for your dedication and hard work in school. We greatly appreciate your efforts,” said Harvey. “I personally want to congratulate you, and I want the Council to be able to congratulate you also.”
Chief Harvey recognized firefighters Jay Wheeler for completion of the Paramedic program, Dawson Stoessell for completion of Advanced EMT, and Matthew Brown for completion of EMT training. Harvey also mentioned Brett Thomas, who was not in attendance, for completing paramedic training last semester.
Mayor Dave Thomas also commended Police Chief Wayne Walton for completing 160 hours of training in the Certified Law Enforcement Executive Program.
The Council also approved the following:
- $2100 for an agreement with Finder software for the Springville Police Department. Councilmember Parker was the lone no vote.
- A resolution to install speed bumps on Crestview Drive which was presented in an earlier meeting.
- Settlements for opioid class action cases with Janssen and McKesson pharmaceutical companies.
- A tax abatement for Springville Beverage Company which will begin bottling and marketing a Springville brand of water.
- $12,000 for renewal of an annual contract for animal impoundment.
The Council also approved a pay increase for City Clerk Lynn Porter, who is now eligible for an increase due to changes in the Retirement System of Alabama’s cap on income.
The Council approved $5261 with Ragsdale Sign for signage at City Hall.
In closing, Mayor Thomas commended the Springville High School band, parents, and boosters for a recent news story where the band and supporters cleaned up around the stadium after the game. He said it was a great example for others.
The next meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on September 19.
