CHAMBERS COUNTY — A Chambers County Deputy Sheriff was killed in the line of duty on Monday, June 20, at approximately 4:30 p.m.
According to the Chambers County Bugle Facebook Page, 24-year-old Deputy J’Mar Colin Abel was assisting Roanoke Police Department in a vehicle chase when Abel lost control of his patrol car while rounding a curve on County Road 278. Deputy Abel was assisting in a vehicle pursuit of a suspect. The suspect was apprehended.
Abel was transported to West Georgia Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Abel was with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office for two years, with today being his anniversary with the department.
The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office asks the public to keep Abel’s family and friends, as well as the brothers and sisters of the Sheriff’s Office, in your thoughts and prayer.
Attorney General Steve Marshall released a statement in response to the death of Abel.
“Alabama’s law enforcement community is saddened tonight to learn of the loss of Chambers County Deputy Sheriff J’Mar Colin Abel, who gave his life while protecting the public,” Marshall stated. “Deputy Sheriff Abel is the seventh Alabama law enforcement officer to perish in the line of duty this year, giving his all to fulfill his oath to protect and serve the public. His loss reminds us of the sacrifice that our law enforcement heroes make for us every day. We can never repay them.”
