TRUSSVILLE — A Cahaba Elementary teacher received a $200 grant for winning an Alabama Education Association (AEA) contest on Wednesday, February 9.

Amy Prickett, the librarian at Cahaba Elementary, is the district five winner of the 2021 Be A Champion and Read Decorating Contest.
“Reading is like the essence of everything we do,” Cahaba Elementary School Principal Joy Tyner said. “So anytime we can get something that brings more attention to that and especially gives us extra funds for that, it’s always a win and especially to honor Ms. Prickett, who we think is just the superstar.”
Participating students at Cahaba Elementary read six books for the Be A Champion and Read Contest. They also had the opportunity to put their name on the “Be A Champion” wall on the side of their favorite team between Alabama and Auburn.
“Our school had great participation in the contest, and the students were so excited to see their name up on the wall,” Prickett said.
The $200 prize money will be combined with other grant money Prickett has received to purchase robotic equipment for the library program at Cahaba Elementary.
“It’s an honor to receive the grant, and we’re really excited to be able to implement some of the funds from the award to put into another grant that we have where we have lots of robotic equipment,” Prickett said. “So we’re gonna add that to our library program.”

“AEA is dedicated to promoting a love of reading for all Alabama students, and our Be A Champion and Read Contest is a terrific way to motivate students to read,” EA President Dr. Susan Williams Brown said. “I congratulate Amy Prickett for winning the decorating contest and commend her for seeking out grants to receive money for purchasing equipment and supplies to enhance student learning for the whole school.”
AEA’s Be A Champion and Read decorating contest ran in conjunction with the Be A Champion and Read student reading contest. To qualify to win the decorating contest, educators across Alabama submitted photos of decorated bulletin boards, walls, or doors that promoted the Be A Champion and Read Contest in their school. One winner was selected from each in-service center district.
