COLUMBIANA — Shelby County Schools announced Thursday it will require mask-wearing indoors from Aug. 30 – Oct. 1.

Superintendent Dr. Lewis Brooks said in a letter that the decision was made after “further analysis of data related to coronavirus and the potential adverse impact on instruction and school operations.”
Brooks said the “health crisis” is forcing the school system to make a temporary change. Brooks urged parents to talk to their children about wearing masks and promised they would get mask breaks throughout the day.
“This temporary change will be welcomed for some and frustrating for others,” the letter stated. “However, we feel strongly it is necessary if we are going to positively impact the rising number of cases in our community.”
Masks will not be required during lunch, recess, or outdoor physical education.
The schools within the system are also continuing to practice frequent cleaning, handwashing, and social distancing techniques.
