BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation following an incident that occurred on Monday, July 12, 2021.
According to a release from the Birmingham Police Department, 28-year-old Sergio Hernandez Leiva, of Birmingham, was killed in a shooting that took place at approximately 4:30 a.m. Monday.
The department says East Precinct officers were dispatched to the 8500 of 3rd Avenue North on report of a person shot. Officers arrived on the scene and discovered Leiva lying in the front yard of a residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The preliminary investigation revealed several individuals at the location were en route to work when an unknown suspect approached them and began firing shots at the victim. The suspect then fled on foot.
There are no suspects in custody.
