LEEDS — The Leeds Area Chamber of Commerce announced the 2021 Teacher of the Year Award on Thursday, May 20, 2021.
Band teacher Erin Lyon, from Leeds Middle School, was awarded during a chamber luncheon.
“The Leeds Area Chamber is a strong supporter of education and each year the Chamber recognizes a teacher from Leeds City Schools who exceeds expectations in serving our schools and students,” the chamber said in a press release about the event. “The Chamber sponsored this year’s Teacher Recognition Program and the award was presented by Leeds City Schools Superintendent John Moore.”
Lyon is known to keep control of her band students while teaching them the fundamentals of music. She participates in afterschool activities with great energy, according to those who know her.
“She continues to talk with classes about choices and challenges to pursue as they grow into adulthood,” the press release continued. “She finds time to let individual students know they are special when she senses there are problems. Mrs. Lyon brings in volunteers to teach small sections or one-on-one to catch students up or refine their skills. She wants every student to shine. Mrs. Lyon is one teacher a student just does not want to disappoint!”
As part of the recognition, Lyon was presented with a $500 check.

Ivan Lentz and Emma Terry, from Leeds High School, were also recognized during the luncheon. The two have been named high school diplomats and they were given $25 gift cards. The two students, along with the other senior diplomats, Ana Arguello, Robyn Blakey and Natalie Sandoval, were also given $500 scholarships from the chamber during an awards event on Sunday.
