Things got a little more serious on Thursday night as one local softball team stepped into area play.

Springville 5, Vestavia Hills 1
Two days after dropping a heartbreaker in extra innings, Springville bounced back with a 5-1 home win over Vestavia Hills on Thursday. Tatum Bartlett doubled with two RBIs, Makalyn Kyser stroked a solo shot, Reagan Cornelius allowed one run in seven innings pitched and the Tigers (9-5) got back into the win column.
Cornelius saw one run score in the first and followed with six innings of shutout work for Springville. The lefty struck out 10 Rebels, walked two and stranded seven on base.
It was a team effort on the offensive end with nine Tigers recording at least one hit on Thursday. Graci Black led with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Hewitt-Trussville 2, Spain Park 1
Hewitt-Trussville opened up Class 7A, Area 3 play with a 2-1 victory at Spain Park Thursday night. Jenna Lord popped a solo homer, Riley Tyree doubled home another and that’s all Huskies’ pitcher Tori Hyde needed to bag the win.
Hyde went all the way, fanning three and allowing one earned run — an Annabelle Widra dinger in the third. The solo shot evened things up at 1-1 and that score held until Tyree doubled home the go-ahead in the top of the seventh.
Hewitt climbs to 14-1 on the year, including a 1-0 mark in area play.
Chelsea 8, Pinson Valley 7
Pinson Valley ripped off a seven-run inning and outhit Chelsea on Thursday night, but still took the L, 8-7. The Indians (3-7) did every bit of their damage in the top of the fourth when they rattled off seven runs to claim a 7-5 advantage, but Chelsea answered with two runs to tie it in the bottom-half and later scratched the go-ahead in the fifth.
Skla Smith and Lauren Hallmark found two hits apiece for Pinson Valley.
McAdory 5, Leeds 2
Leeds struggled to get to McAdory pitcher Macy Sanders on Thursday night in a 5-2 defeat. The Green Wave (2-6) totaled only two hits thanks to Sophie Gromko and Maddie Anthony while Sanders struck out six and pinned three runners on base.
