From The Tribune staff reports
TRUSSVILLE – Dr. Drew Smith of Northside Medical Associates shared with local rotarians some info on an important topic: Covid-19.
“This issue has been a topic of great divisiveness in our country and has created so many other issues, such as mental health, emotional, economic, and financial issues,” said Smith to the Trussville Rotary Club. “There is light at the end of the tunnel. We just need to work together to cross the finish line.”
In Alabama, there have been almost 7,000 deaths. “If that many deaths had occurred as a result of something like a tornado, we would all bond together to help each other get through it,” he continued.
In addition to ‘masking up’, washing hands, and practicing social distancing, Smith also encourages the public to take vitamin D and C, zinc, pepcid, and Zyrtec to protect against the virus.
Smith’s presentation was shared by Zoom on Wednesday.
Rotarians also heard from Dejarvis Leonard, of the Alabama Department of Transportation, on Jan. 20. Leonard, who has overseen 12 counties in Alabama for the past six years, shared some of the projects that have either been completed recently in this area or are in the works. Most recently, he told of the project to upgrade Main Street in Trussville to help make it a more walkable area. He also spoke about a project that will run south to the Cahaba in partnership with the Metropolitan Planning Organization, which will start soon.
Allison Cambre met with the club on Jan. 13, sharing her experiences as an events coordinator at the Birmingham Business Journal pre- and post-COVID. Cambre says they hope to have in-person events again by July.
On Jan. 6, Jefferson County EMA Director Jim Coker and a member of his staff, Melissa Sizemore, spoke to the club to share an update on how their organization handles emergencies with a specific focus on COVID. Note: the number for the COVID call center is 205-858-2221 or 205-85V-ACC1.
The Club currently meets at 7 a.m. on the first through fourth Wednesday mornings of each month, mostly by Zoom. For more information on the Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club, or to help with one of our projects, please email Diane Poole at dianepoole1225@centurytel.net.
