BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department announced the arrest of a Hoover Police officer and his wife as part of a narcotics investigation.
Barry Erksine Stamps, 56, of Pelham, and Mary Stamps, 34, also of Pelham, were arrested on Monday, Oct. 5, 2020.
Members of Birmingham’s Interdiction Unit pulled over the couple on Interstate 459 North, at exit 10, around 3 p.m. The officers made the stop for failure to signal.
“During the traffic stop officers made contact with the driver Mary Stamps,” Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin said in a press release. “During the traffic stop the passenger Barry Stamps identified himself as a Hoover Police Officer.”
Officers said they found 27 grams of cocaine, five grams of marijuana and two handguns in the vehicle. Both subjects were arrested on charges of possession with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of marijuana second-degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
The pair will be taken to the Jefferson County Jail. Formal charges are pending from the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
