CULLMAN COUNTY — The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a triple shooting that happened on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2020, around 1 a.m.
Levi Benjamin Lawrence, 24, of Cullman, and Dalton Matthew Bannister, 36, of Blountsville, were both pronounced dead at the scene, in the New Canaan community. Another person was also shot and injured.
Sheriff Matt Gentry said Lawrence was a victim and Bannister and Tyler Dwight Dooley, 26, of Arab, were suspects.
“He defended himself and as a result, he shot someone that did bad things, who is now deceased but in turn, he lost his life,” Gentry said.
Gentry said the two planned to rob Lawrence.
“These individuals are known throughout those communities to do those kinds of things,” Gentry said. “As you can look in their criminal history, their criminal histories reflect the poor choices they’ve made in life.”
Dooley has been charged with murder.
Two other people were also charged in connection to the investigation. Jacob Andrew Drane, 21, of New Canaan, is charged with criminal tampering second-degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Ricky Dale Martin, 48, of New Canaan is charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
