BIRMINGHAM — Police responding to a call of a person shot at 1221 Gulfport Street found a 7-year-old child suffering from a gunshot wound to the hand, Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin.
As officers investigated the incident, they found an adult male on the floor inside the residence dead from gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred at about 9:48 p.m. on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Roderick Smith, 32, of Birmingham.
The child was transported to Children’s Hospital.
“The preliminary investigation suggest after the incident occurred, the child went to a neighbor’s home to summon help,” Mauldin said. “Detectives have limited information in this investigation. There are no suspects in custody. Detectives have not established a clear motive in this homicide”
