Now that the effort to impeach President Donald Trump is in the history books, we can look back at the past six months and determine the winners and losers.
We know ultimately the president was the winner and Congressional Democrats were the losers, but what about from the Alabama perspective.
First of all, you have to say Alabama Senator Richard Shelby is a winner.
He did not mince words that he was going to vote to acquit and his vote reflected that sentiment.
Secondly, you have to say Congressman Bradley Byrne is a winner. Following the Senate vote to end the impeachment, Trump gave kudos to a number of folks for their roles in the entire trial and specifically called out Byrne, who was the only Congressman from Alabama recognized. This cannot hurt him in his race for the United States Senate.
Which leads to the biggest loser in the entire impeachment saga from Alabama, Senator Doug Jones. He was already in a difficult battle for reelection, but voting to remove President Trump from office is probably the last straw to guarantee his days in DC are numbered. His vote was consistent with his positions, which have almost always followed Democratic leadership in Washington DC
Alabama is one of the strongest supporters of President Trump, so ultimately the state was a winner too.
