BIRMINGHAM — An off duty Birmingham police officer was shot while responding to a robbery early Sunday morning.
In a story first reported by Carol Robinson of AL.com, the officer was off duty and working at the Church of the Highlands when he responded to a robbery nearby in the 5400 block of Georgia Road in the Woodlawn neighborhood at around 9:30 a.m. The location is south of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport.
According to media reports, the officer was shot twice in the stomach and in the arm. He was transported to UAB Hospital. His condition is unknown.
The suspect is still on the loose.
