WINFIELD — A minor earthquake was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey on Sunday morning four kilometers northeast of Winfield, Alabama.
The quake, which took place at 9:05 a.m., was not reported, nor apparently noticed by anyone. Winfield is about 76 miles northwest of Birmingham.
According to the Geological Survey of Alabama, the strongest earthquake to recently occur was a 4.3 quake that happened on Nov. 7, 2004, in Greene County.
The strongest earthquake to ever be reported in Alabama was a 5.1 quake on Oct. 18, 1916, in Shelby County.
The majority of the earthquakes experienced in Alabama are associated with the Southern Appalachian Seismic Zone, which runs along the Appalachian Mountains from the top northeastern corner down into the central part of the state.
