MONTGOMERY — Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recognized 362 schools on Thursday as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2019 based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Of those 362 schools, Alabama is home to six of them.
The schools are: Baldwin Arts and Academics Magnet School in Montgomery; Daphne Elementary School in Daphne; Eichold-Mertz School of Math, Science and Technology in Mobile; Guin Elementary School in Marion County; Hampton Cove Elementary School in Huntsville, and Prattville Christian Academy in Prattville.
According to a U.S. Department of Education release, “the National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. The National Blue Ribbon Schools flag gracing a school’s building is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning. National Blue Ribbon Schools are an inspiration and a model for schools still striving for excellence.”
The department is set to formally recognize the 312 public and 50 private schools at an awards ceremony at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Maryland on Nov. 14 and 15, 2019.
Now in its 37th year, the U. S. Department of Education has granted this award on over 9,000 schools.
