WOODVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A man has died in a rappelling accident at Stephen’s Gap in Alabama, making it the second fatal fall at that location this year.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as 20-year-old Phillip Whitehead. Investigators said he was climbing with a friend when the accident occurred Sunday night.
Stephen’s Gap is a cave in northern Alabama that has a 143-foot (44 meter) pit. It was the site of another fatal fall in April.
News outlets reported that authorities said Whitehead was from Florida and served in the Army, currently stationed at Fort Campbell.
