BIRMINGHAM — The world is turning faster than the wheels of any race car, and if the students of today are going to keep up with demands of tomorrow, they are going to need to be familiar with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).
The Engineering Academy POE (Principles of Engineering) students got a healthy dose of STEM on April 4, when they spent the day at Barber’s Speedway.
The event focused on helping students determine their career paths by providing valuable career resources.
Several speakers presented opportunities available to the students in a wide variety of careers.
Speakers included an Indy Car driver, a team manager, and Alabama Power representatives.
One major topic discussed was the current and future status of electric transportation and job opportunities in this field.
After the presentations, students worked in small groups to design and assemble pinewood derby cars with the assistance from Alabama Power engineers. After the cars were assembled, each group raced their cars head-to-head in bracket races. Hewitt-Trussville POE Girls’ pinewood derby car finished second out of 25 cars.
