CENTER POINT — Filling in for Council President Roger Barlow, who was absent on Thursday night, Councilor Terry Leesburg led a brief meeting of the Center Point City Council. During the meeting, the council passed three resolutions, including the demolition of a vacant house located in the city.
The council unanimously approved the demolition of 1933 Second Place Northwest, passed as 2018-49. This comes after the council authorized bids for other vacant houses at the last meeting, with two of them being excluded from the agenda when owners requested time to make repairs.
Afterwards, the council passed two more resolutions, with one regarding City Clean Up Day to take place on July 11 from 8 a.m. to when volunteers are finished working. The city appropriated up to $300 for the event. Center Point Mayor Tom Henderson said that many of the volunteers were recruited from the high school for the clean up effort.
The last resolution was passed as 2018-51, authorizing up to $2,500 for the city’s Back to School Rally on July 14 where free backpacks and school supplies will be given out to local students.
After the regular business was concluded, Henderson gave his comments. He said that bids for the splash pad will open on July 10 at 2 p.m. at City Hall. He reported that plans for the renovation of the community center will be ready on July 2 and plans for the library will be ready on July 30 or on Aug. 6.
During the councilors’ reports, Leesburg said that the new LED lights for the gym at Hilldale are in for installation. He also reported that sands have been poured at the football field. Councilor Bobby Scott said that the beautification awards are ongoing and encouraged the public to recommend houses to be considered for awards.
Councilor Linda Kennemur reported that the next meeting of the Neighborhood Watch will be held on July 3rd with members of Center Point Fire District to give tips on firework safety. Members of the health department will also be there to discuss mosquito control. Councilor James Howell did not have a report but encouraged people in the public with trash or brush in their yards to call Advance Disposal and request removal.
Leesburg said that the farmer’s market started today at City Hall and will be held on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to the end of August.
The next Center Point City Council will be held on June 28 with pre-council at 6:45, followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m.
