BIRMINGHAM –Tuesday brought rain, cold and a big baseball win for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers over the University of Alabama Crimson Tide at Regions Field.
A pair of former Hewitt-Trussville Huskies, Carter Pharis and Tyler Tolbert, came up big for the Blazers in the win, as did former Clay-Chalkville Cougar Matthew Calvert. Thomas Johns, another former Clay-Chalkville Couger, had two hits and an RBI that night.
With Alabama leading 1-0 after the top half of the first inning, Pharis singled to right field scoring Cole Collins to tie the game. UAB added three more runs to take a 4-1 lead into the 2nd inning.
The the bottom of the second inning, Tolbert drove in what would prove to be the game winning run, knocking in Stephen Dobbs to put the Blazers up 5-1. It was Tolbert’s fifth RBI of the season.
Calvert was the winning pitcher for UAB, picking up his first win of the season.
UAB went on to post a 6-4 victory over the Crimson Tide.
