TRUSSVILLE – One Trussville family has a legacy at Cahaba Elementary School that spans current and future generations.
John and Sandra Grissom are Trussville residents, John having graduated from the high school when it was housed in the Cahaba Building in 1956.
The Grissom children, Johnny Grissom, Lisa Grissom Lothspeich, Lori Grissom Fant and Benny Grissom decided to surprise their parents by naming a classroom after them in the newly renovated Cahaba Elementary School.
Lisa Lothspeich teaches 5th grade math at Cahaba Elementary, and invited her parents to visit her classroom while the entire family hid inside, revealing the sign that contained their parents names.
“They were overwhelmed by this honor,” Lothspeich said. “My dad told us it was the best thing anyone has ever done for him.”
Seven of the Grissom’s great-grandchildren were present, two of which are in first grade in Trussville City Schools, one at Cahaba Elementary and one at Paine Elementary. The other great-grandchildren will also make their way through Trussville City Schools when they are of age.
“It was a great moment in my life to see the plaque with our names on it,” John Grissom said.
