PINSON — The Pinson City Council voted to financially aid two area fire districts and an elementary school on Thursday night.
The council voted to give $20,000 to Palmerdale Fire Department so that they could buy land for a new facility. The Council had previously given a similar amount of money to Center Point Fire District for the same reason.
“It makes sense that if we help one we help the other, because they really split our community in half, providing mutual aid for one another and helping one another,” councilman Joe Cochran said. “So we really don’t want to be perceived as helping one more than the other, so I think it is appropriate.”
Parts of Glennwood fire district have also been annexed into the Pinson city limits within the last two years. Though very few Pinson parcels are within the Glennwood district, the council voted to provide $500 to the department to help pay expenses.
“I think $500 in that particular fire department would go a long way in helping those guys out,” Cochrane said. “They don’t have another municipality that can help them, as far as I know.”
In addition to funding allocations to the fire districts, the council also provides additional funds to schools within the city limits.
Pinson Elementary School has asked that their annual allocation from the city for $12,500 be used for paving. Two parking lots, which are currently gravel will be paved using the funds. The school administrators made the same request last year, which resulted in a new bus ramp being installed.
“(The) two primary areas are the gravel along school drive and the pea gravel area between the current parking and playground,” Mayor Hoyt Sanders said.
