TRUSSVILLE – The University of Tennessee at Martin has extended one Hewitt-Trussville linebacker his first scholarship offer.
Jalen Williams, the Huskies’ 2014 sacks leader, was on an official visit to Middle Tennessee State University last week when he ran into Skyhawks’ coaches who happened to be in the area. Despite being behind enemy lines, the UT Martin coaches offered Williams a scholarship.
“I really like the coach that recruits the area,” said Williams. “He’s really, really honest and I like that a lot. He told me that their campus is not like what I’m used to, because you have to have 30 or 40 minutes if you want to go anywhere.”
Williams believes his natural instincts as a defender along with his intelligence caught the attention of Skyhawks’ coaches.
Those tools have also attracted “medium” attention from the Middle Tennessee State staff. According to Williams, he’s had conversations with the team’s linebackers coach.
The upcoming senior recorded over 100 tackles for Hewitt-Trussville last season, landing him on the first annual All-Tribune roster.
After camping at Davidson College last week, Williams looks to open more recruiting doors by attending camps at Furman and Clemson over the summer months. He would also like to visit UT Martin’s campus.
“Hopefully more offers will come,” Williams said.
