ORLANDO, Fla. – Brent Key, a former football standout at Hewitt-Trussville in the mid 90’s, has been named the University of Central Florida’s next offensive coordinator.
Following a high school career on the Huskies’ offensive line, Key went on to star at the next level. He played as a four-year starter at Georgia Tech from 1997 to 2000 before dipping into the world of coaching as a graduate assistant for the Yellow Jackets in 2001 under head coach George O’Leary.
O’Leary took the head job at Central Florida in 2004. One year later, he brought Key onboard as a graduate assistant and has allowed him to climb up the Knights’ coaching ladder for the last 11 years.
Over those 11 seasons, Key has served as a graduate assistant, tight ends coach, recruiting coordinator, special teams coach, offensive line coach and assistant head coach. His latest promotion named him offensive coordinator and running backs coach.
As a player at Georgia Tech, Key helped lead a string of winning not often seen in Atlanta. He started 44 games on the Yellow Jackets’ offensive line and helped his team reach four consecutive bowl games for the first time in nearly 50 years.
Key was recognized as a member of the All-ACC team in 2000 when Georgia Tech ranked in the nation’s top-20 in total offense, scoring offense and passing offense.
