TRUSSVILLE – College football coaches from across the Southeastern Conference are quickly beginning to take notice in Hewitt-Trussville Class of 2016 running back Jarrion Street.
As a junior, Street ran 1,165 yards on 183 carries, 14 of which ended in the end zone. He also proved to be a diverse piece in first-year head coach Josh Floyd’s up-tempo offense, securing 23 receptions for 245 yards and a pair of scores.
That campaign was good enough to land him on the AHSAA Class 7A All-State second team. Iowa State became the first Power 5 program to offer the ball carrier in March, but a verbal offer from Ole Miss on May 20 has since opened the door to many more opportunities.
According to Street, Missouri began pursuing him hard following the Rebels scholarship extension. He expects coach Gary Pinkel and the Tigers to make an offer any day now.
“With me having that Ole Miss offer, I’ve been hearing from Florida, Florida State, Alabama and Auburn,” said Street. “I think it really drew the attention of my in-state, SEC schools. I think it made them look at me closer.”
Street would like to make a commitment before the start of his senior season. He only wants two programs to be on his mind during the season: the college that he’s committed to and Hewitt-Trussville.
“I kind of want to have this over with before the season starts,” said Street. “(I don’t want) to worry about all of this recruiting during the season.”
Ole Miss, who offered him as an ‘athlete’, is currently his leader.
“My leader right now is Ole Miss, but other than Ole Miss, it’s pretty neutral,” Street said. “I just want to wait it out and look into other programs that are interested in me.”
Street is particularly fond of in-state programs like Alabama and Auburn. An offer from either school could chance his leaderboard.
Floyd’s quick-hit offense has been in place with the Huskies for a full year now, and Street sees many comparisons to that offense and the scheme he would see with the Rebels.
“I think that would make it much easier for me to come in and kind of already know the system and know the spread,” said Street. “I think it would make me come in and catch on fast.”
Ole Miss wants to look at Street in the backfield first, but likes his divers skillset that makes him a viable option on the defensive side of the ball.
“(Ole Miss) said that they want me to come in and play running back, but if running back doesn’t work out, they can also try me a safety or linebacker or receiver,” Street said.
Floyd’s offseason weight program starts next week, and Street wants to take that opportunity to add significant size and strength.
“I think that will be huge,” said Street. “I think that will change my game a lot and help me get more yards after contact.”
