BIRMINGHAM – According to the preliminary investigation of Birmingham Police Department detectives, a gambling dispute seems to be the cause of another homicide investigation.
West Precinct officers arrived in the 300 block of Sixth Street SW on Sunday around 7 p.m. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced one victim dead at the scene from what appeared to be multiple gunshots to the chest.
The victim, who was found lying in the kitchen, has not been named. One suspect is currently being detained at UAB Hospital.
That suspect, a male, checked into the hospital shortly after the incident on Sixth Street SW occurred. He was suffering from gunshot wounds to both his arms and leg, and will remain detained at the hospital until he can be released.
Authorities believe the patient at UAB and the deceased victim got into an altercation over gambling, resulting in a shootout that left one dead.
This investigation is ongoing and anyone with knowledge of the crime is encouraged to contact the Birmingham Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 254-7777.
