LEEDS — Hewitt-Trussville High School Engineering Academy students competed Monday in the Electrathon race at Barber Motorsports.
The Hewitt-Trussville Engineering Academy has two teams. The girls’ team consists of Emma Slay, Emma Burford, Kaitlin Silverwood and Amanda Green. The boys’ team consists of team captain A.J. Ward, Blake Hoggan, Cody Wilcox, Bin Tran and Taylor Herrin.
The students race for one hour in the morning and then again for another hour in the afternoon. The total number of laps completed determines the winners of the race. The cars are built by students and must be powered only by batteries and an electric motor.
There were 19 teams competing in the race Monday. The girls’ team placed first and the boys’ team placed second.
Barber Motorsports is a demanding race track for the small electric race cars. It’s a 2.5-mile racing circuit with 17 turns and elevation changes of more than 80 feet.
