TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville Civic Center played host to a top-3 matchup Tuesday night.
Hewitt-Trussville, the top-ranked girls’ soccer team in Class 7A, faced off with No. 3 Vestavia Hills in an exciting Area 6 contest, in which the Lady Rebels snuck away with a 3-2 victory by way of extra time penalty kicks.
Within the first minute of the game, Vestavia Hills opened up the scoring with a goal. The score remained 1-0 until Megan McGettigan broke the drought for the Lady Huskies with 25 minutes to play in regulation.
The big break nearly came for Hewitt-Trussville, as Madison Snow was fouled in the penalty area with just five minutes remaining. Lacy LeMaster buried her penalty kick in the back of the net for the 2-1 lead. But the favor was returned for the Lady Rebels, as they received a penalty kick of their own and converted it with 13 seconds left in regulation to tie things up.
A shootout ensued after a scoreless overtime period, in which Vestavia Hills made the most of its opportunities. The Lady Rebels walked away with a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks and left with a win.
Both Clay-Chalkville teams traveled to Southside-Gadsden to play its Section 6 opponents. Neither Cougars team was able to make a dent in the scoreboard, as the girls fell 7-0 and the boys squad lost 4-0. The defeat was the first loss of the season for the boys.
Pinson Valley’s boys’ soccer team played Class 7A opponent Mountain Brook. The Spartans knocked off the Indians 2-0.
