TRUSSVILLE — Hewitt-Trussville lacrosse is still in its infant stages, but sending a player to the next level is a big step toward maturity.
Senior Alex White will be the program’s first lacrosse player to sign an athletic scholarship, according to head coach Jamey Curlee. White is expected to sign with the University of Alabama in Huntsville and if she stays true to her commitment, she will be jumping from one startup program to another.
In September 2014, the Chargers announced they would be adding men’s and women’s lacrosse to their collection of varsity sports, and that they would begin competing at the Division II level in the spring of 2016, making White a member of a school’s inaugural team for the second time in her young career.

She competed on the Huskies’ first-ever lacrosse team, which reached the state playoffs last season when she was a junior.
“This is a big deal for us,” Curlee said. “In just two years, we have already started to get kids to play at the next level.”
He hopes to put more kids on White’s path. Curlee already fields a varsity and junior varsity boys’ team, along with a varsity girls’ program at Hewitt-Trussville. Including his three local U.S. Lacrosse teams, Curlee has more than 120 kids in the Trussville lacrosse program.
“Our U-11 and U-13 teams have grown as well,” Curlee said. “Three years ago we started with one U-13 team. We now have a U-11 and two U-13 teams. Almost 100 percent growth in two years.”
White and the girls have 10 games scheduled this year, not including the Dan Anderson Tournament on April 18. The boys have 12 regular season games scheduled, the first of which will be Feb. 21 at Prattville.
Both the boys and girls will be in action at the Trussville Sports Complex on Saturday, Feb. 28. The girls take on James Clements at 1 p.m. followed by the boys’ game against Grissom. Admission to home games is free.
