MONTGOMERY — The Senate Committee on Assignments has announced that Sen. Shay Shelnutt, R-Trussville, has been appointed to serve on the Banking and Insurance, Confirmations, Education and Youth Affairs and Governmental Affairs committees.
The decision comes after much deliberation and careful consideration on the most efficient operation of the Alabama Senate.
“I want to thank the Committee on Assignments for placing me on these committees,” Shelnutt said. “Because of their placement I have a great opportunity to best serve the people of Senate District 17. I look forward to working with my colleagues as we continue to address the issues facing hard working Alabamians.”
Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, R-Anniston, said Shelnutt will be a valuable addition to his assigned committees.
“Sen. Shelnutt is a leader who’s committed to working hard, tackling tough issues and always striving to best represent the people of his district,” Marsh said. “He’s well respected by his colleagues and I’m confident that he’ll prove to be a valuable addition to his committees.”
Shelnutt defeated Locust Fork’s Brett King in the race for the Alabama State Senate District 17 seat in July 2014, totaling 8,591 votes, or 52 percent. King had 8,051 votes, or 48 percent.
When all 51 precincts were reported in the June 3, 2014 primary election, Shelnutt totaled 7,475 votes and King had accumulated 6,566.
District 17 includes parts of Blount, Jefferson, St. Clair and Talladega counties.
