GRAYSON VALLEY — Just after 8 p.m. Tuesday Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence in the 2600 block of Streetman Circle in the Grayson Valley area to investigate a report of an abandoned newborn.
It was reported to deputies that the couple who lived at the address were asleep when they were awakened by a knock on their front door. They opened the door and their neighbor told them that she had gone out to check the mail and heard a baby crying. She followed the sound of the cries into their yard where she found a newborn baby wrapped in a towel. They brought the infant inside because of the temperature and called the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The child was wearing a short-sleeved onesie and was wrapped only in a towel. The umbilical cord was still attached, according to the sheriff’s office.
The baby was a black female only hours old. The Center Point Fire Department responded to check the condition of the child and transported her to the hospital. The child is said to be in good condition.
The investigation revealed that the mother of the child is a 15-year-old neighbor who had hidden the pregnancy from her parents. She delivered the child at home alone in the bathroom about 4 p.m. Tuesday. When her parents arrived home at about 6 p.m. she slipped out the back and placed the child on the ground near her neighbor’s front door.
The mother was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and is also in good condition.
Sheriff’s detectives will present the case to the District Attorney’s Office to determine what, if any, charges will be filed.
