CLAY – The Alabama Sports Writers Association has narrowed its list and Clay-Chalkville junior quarterback Ty Pigrome is a finalist for the Class 6A Back of the Year award.
Pigrome, a first-year starter, has already claimed the 2014 Metro Football Player of the Year award to go alongside his state championship ring.
The righty also brought home the title game MVP with a five-touchdown performance over No. 3 Saraland in the Super 7 finale. But to build on his many accomplishments, Pigrome will have to overcome two opponents that he’s already beat on the field.
Pigrome totaled 61 touchdowns in 2014 — 36 passing, 24 rushing and one receiving. He completed 157 of his 234 passes for 2,692 yards and only seven interceptions. Pigrome rushed 145 times for 1,254 yards, an average of 8.6 yards per carry.
Shades Valley athlete Keith Mixon and Saraland quarterback Chris Weaver are the two finalists challenging Pigrome.
Being named a finalist for Back of the Year makes Pigrome eligible for the state’s highest high school football honor – the Mr. Football award, which will be presented in Montgomery on Jan. 14, 2015 at the Player of the Year luncheon.
