CLAY — A Clay-Chalkville High School sophomore vision student recently won the Spirit of Liz Moore Award.
Frankayla Brazzill won the award after being nominated by her teacher, Kathryn Manley.
Brazzill joined Manley’s self-contained class in October. She has Type I diabetes and a significant visual impairment.
“Frankayla is so confident in her own abilities and determined to be independent that I have to remind myself that she doesn’t see well,” Manley said in her nomination letter. “She notices when one of my students with autism is trying to wander and will shut the door and get back to work without a word.”
Brazzill received a plaque and $500.
Liz Moore was a local patron of students with low vision who died earlier this year. At the St. Vincent’s East Liz Moore Low Vision Center holiday contest awards reception Dec. 16, JefCoEd was represented with 10 honorable mentions, including Brazzill.
Brazzill’s holiday artwork is also on the back of U.S. Congressman Spencer Bachus’ holiday card.
