CHALKVILLE — Two Chalkville Elementary School counselors recently won the Recognition of Accountability, Verification and Excellence silver award from the Alabama School Counselor Association.
Lynn Wasylenko and Pam Beckham won the award. The duo won the bronze award last year.
The award is awarded for exemplary implementation of the comprehensive counseling and guidance model for Alabama public schools.
For school climate and safety, the counselors provide lessons on peer pressure, bullying, problem solving, decision making and anger management. Two programs started by the counselors, Cougar Paws and Cougars in Action/School Cleanup Program, have increased pro-social behavior. There were 931 referrals in 2011-2012. For the past two years, the average of discipline has dropped to 388.
Students pick up trash and debris each Monday, a task organized by the student government. A survey shows that 82 percent of students take pride in their school.
It is the sixth year in a row that a Jefferson County school has won some part of the RAVE award.
