BIRMINGHAM — A 19-year-old Birmingham man has been arrested after leaving his car at the scene of a burglary near Clay.
On Wednesday night, two men broke into a home in the 5200 block of Dug Hollow Road. They encountered a 16-year-old female home alone and ran from the residence. Their car was parked in the driveway, but they had lost the keys and fled on foot, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

A wallet containing identification was found in the car. Detectives were able to identify the owner of the car as one of the suspects who had broken into the home. Late Thursday afternoon arrest warrants were obtained charging 19-year-old Derrick Dewayne Pennington of Birmingham with first-degree burglary and second-degree robbery.
Just after 9 p.m. Thursday detectives located him at a home in the 100 block of Lawson Drive. He was arrested without incident. Pennington was questioned by detectives and admitted to taking part in the burglary. He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail, where he remains with bonds totaling $70,000.
