TRUSSVILLE — Children’s Hospital, in conjunction with the Alabama High School Athletic Association, has elected Hewitt-Trussville High School freshman Alex Thompson to be an honorary captain at the Class 5A state championship game Thursday at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn.
Thompson is one of seven past and present patients of Children’s Hospital that was chosen from a list of about 200 candidates. Thompson will be on the sideline before the game, walk to midfield and present the umpire with the coin for the toss.
The umpire will then announce her name as an honorary captain representing Children’s Hospital.
Thompson suffered from a life-threatening brain tumor two years ago and had two brain surgeries at Children’s Hospital.
The Class 5A state championship pits St. Paul’s (14-0) against Pleasant Grove (12-2). Kickoff at Jordan-Hare Stadium is at 7 p.m.
