TRUSSVILLE — Trussville Mayor Gene Melton said Tuesday that a contractor hired to enhance a stretch of the Cahaba River in Trussville was on site and getting to work.
The city of Trussville hired North Carolina-based North State Environmental to enhance a stretch of the river from Cherokee Drive to the Civitan Bridge at Civitan Park. North State Environmental was awarded the project with a bid of $828,299.46.

Melton said the company will restructure the river under U.S. Army Corps of Engineers guidance to prevent erosion, and enhance the vegetation and aquatic life. He said the enhancements are good for the environment and city.
“It’s a big undertaking,” Melton said.
Flooding has caused erosion along the Cahaba River banks and these enhancements will help against that, Melton said. Melton has said enhancements will include flood mitigation, steps to improve the river and river banks, and planting native species that will aid in controlling flooding.
The enhancements are expected to be completed by the end of the year, Melton has said.
