TRUSSVILLE — Hewitt-Trussville badly needs a win at Thompson on Friday night to keep hope for a Class 7A playoff spot.
Kickoff from Larry Simmons Stadium is at 7 p.m.
Hewitt-Trussville is 3-3 overall and 1-3 in Class 7A, Region 3. Thompson is 0-6 this year with an 0-4 mark in region play. Hoover is 4-0 in the region, followed by Mountain Brook and Oak Mountain, who are both 3-1. Vestavia Hills and Tuscaloosa County are both 2-2, and Spain Park is 1-3. The top four teams from the region make the playoffs.
“We’ve just got to get a win,” Hewitt-Trussville junior linebacker Bailey McElwain said after Friday’s 45-38 loss to Oak Mountain.
The Huskies certainly do. Oak Mountain hosts Mountain Brook this Friday, and Hewitt-Trussville needs the Eagles to win. The Huskies must take care of their own business at Thompson, so that the Oct. 17 matchup of Hewitt-Trussville at Mountain Brook becomes important for a possible final playoff spot. Tuscaloosa County must still face Hoover, Thompson and Vestavia Hills. Vestavia Hills must still play Spain Park, Hoover and Tuscaloosa County.
Things could get shaken up quite a bit this month. But for any of it to matter to Hewitt-Trussville, it must get a win in Alabaster this Friday. Thompson is allowing 42.75 points per game in region play, while its offense is producing just 17.75 points in those four games.
Hewitt-Trussville needs to play a spirited game from kickoff to the final seconds, to put both halves of football together for a complete game. The Huskies got behind the 8 ball against Oak Mountain in the first half last week but played well in the second half. The Huskies didn’t quit.
“That’s the Hewitt-Trussville way,” McElwain said of the team’s fight.
Hewitt-Trussville head coach Josh Floyd said after the loss to Oak Mountain that the fight his team has shows a lot of character.
“At this point we’ve got to stick together,” he said.
Expect Hewitt-Trussville to light up the scoreboard at Thompson on Friday night and win convincingly. The Huskies need a lot of confidence heading into final region games at Mountain Brook and against Hoover, and they should get it at Thompson.
