TRUSSVILLE — The 7th Grade Huskies football 2022 Birmingham Metro Champions was honored during the Trussville City Council on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
According to the proclamation, the Hewitt-Trussville 7th Grade football team competed this fall against Bragg, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Oak Mountain, Liberty Park, Clay-Chalkville, and Pizitz over its regular season.
“They steamrolled their way to a perfect 8-0 season, outscoring their opponents 322 to 88,” the proclamation states. “They beat Berry 52-32 in the Metro Championship matchup.”
Head Coach Terry Gillespie was named 7th Grade Metro Coach of the Year. The 7th Grade Huskies’ season-long success on the gridiron makes our community even more optimistic about the future for our schools’ football teams.
“I would like to say congratulations on a great season my granddaughter’s in seventh grade, and we enjoyed coming to all the football games and cheering y’all on,” Council President Lisa Bright said. “Well done and well done, coaches.”
The Mayor and City Council congratulated the Hewitt Trussville 7th Grade Huskies, Head Coach Terry Gillespie; assistant coaches Scott Bromley, Clint Argo, Bryan Hinds, Chris Pike, Darren Robertson, Chase Pate, Tyler Colvert, Carter Pharis, Matt Ryan; student trainers Sophie Blount, Mallorie Selesky, Natalie Keith; staff; the entire team and their families on their successful season.
“I just want to say thank you for allowing us to come to the city council and take a moment to recognize these guys,” Gillespie said. “These guys work really hard. We had a very large player roster; we had a roster close to 60 to 63 players, and many of them are currently involved in wrestling, basketball, and other rec sports. But these guys have worked really hard.”
Gillespie said they started their workouts and regimen in June and early July and continue to practice all the way into late October.
“To do what they did and against the teams and schools that we have gone against, it really says a lot about their hard work and dedication to the school and community and to represent Hewitt-Trussville Middle School and continue to do great things,” Gillespie said. “We appreciate your support in HTMS athletics.”
