CLAY — The Clay City Council met Tuesday night, November 8, for the first scheduled meeting of the month. The meeting lasted less than four minutes after the opening prayer and pledge due to nothing being on the agenda on an election night.
“We have no public hearings. We have no resolutions, no weed abatements,” Mayor Charles Webster said. “Y’all came on a good night. It’s going to be short and sweet.”
With no public business on the agenda, Webster moved the meeting into Mayor and Council comments. Council members Dean Kirkner and Chris Nail were not in attendance.
Councilor Bo Johnson announced the city’s annual Veterans Day luncheon.
“This Friday, we will have the City of Clay Veterans Day luncheon at Clearview starting at 10:30 with pictures and 11 o’clock with programs,” Johnson said. “We want to encourage all veterans in the area to attend that.”
The luncheon at Clearview Baptist Church is free for veterans, and each can bring one guest. Attendees are asked to make reservations by November 9 by calling 205-680-1223 or emailing pgilham@clayalabama.org.
In his comments, City Manager Ronnie Dixon added comments about the city’s recent grocery tax cuts.
“We have had some very positive comments and press about the two-cent tax reduction,” Dixon said. “Hopefully, it will make a difference at Thanksgiving and Christmas time for the next couple of years.”
Councilmember Dr. Orletta Rush said Clay-Chalkville High School participated in a scholarship day last week, and students received $83,000 in scholarships.
Webster announced the city tree lighting at 5 p.m. at Cosby Lake the Sunday night after Thanksgiving. The next meeting of the Clay City Council is set for Tuesday, November 22.
