BESSEMER — Two inmates died at the William Donaldson Correctional Facility this weekend.
According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, 66-year-old Timmy Wilson was an inmate at William Donaldson Correctional Facility serving a life sentence for rape from a 1990 conviction out of Covington County.
He was found unresponsive in his cell by his cellmate on Friday, September 30.
“An examination performed on Oct. 1, 2022, found no evidence of trauma or foul play related to death,” Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates stated. “The death is believed to be of natural causes, pending additional laboratory studies.”
Denarieya Letrex Smith, 30, was an inmate at William Donaldson Correctional Facility serving a life sentence for attempted murder from a 2017 conviction out of Covington County.
“The decedent sustained sharp force injuries during a reported assault by other inmates [on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022],” Yates stated. “The death is being investigated as a homicide.”
The circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated by the Alabama Department of Correction – Law Enforcement Services Division.
