BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) is investigating a crash that claimed the life of two people on Sunday, August 14, around 1:20 a.m.
According to the BPD, South Precinct officers were dispatched to 230 20th Street South (Publix Midtown) on a report of a traffic accident.
“Officers arrived on the scene and observed a small sedan that had collided into a tree,” Officer Truman Fitzgerald said. “Officers observed two unresponsive occupants inside of the vehicle.”
Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the front-seat passenger (adult female) dead. BFR transported the driver (adult male) to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead by UAB Hospital staff.
“Birmingham Police Traffic Homicide Investigators responded to the scene,” Fitzgerald said. “Currently, we believe speed played a factor in the cause of this accident.”
