MONTGOMERY — Incumbent Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey is projected to win the GOP nomination outright, while Katie Britt and Mo Brooks appear headed to a runoff.
Ivey has 54.42 percent on the vote with 92% of precincts counted and leads her nearest challenger, Lindy Blanchard, 356,319 votes to Blanchard’s 125,913.
“I thank you with all my soul,” Ivey told supporters on Tuesday night in her first public comments after the primary. “I am so proud to be your governor.”
Ivey will face either Democratic challenger, Yolanda Flowers or Malika Fortier, who are set for a runoff. Flowers leads 56,859 votes to Fortier’s 54,636, but neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote.
In the U.S. Senate race, Britt leads Brooks by more than 100,000 votes — 288,745 to 188,142 — but couldn’t avoid a runoff. Britt has 45.07 percent of the vote with 90% of precincts counted.
Britt or Brooks will face Democratic challenger Will Boyd, who easily defeated Brandaun Dean 107,344 votes to 32,843 with 87 percent of the votes counted.
