BIRMINGHAM — Police here shot a a man involved in what investigators characterize as a domestic violence incident on Sunday, May 8.
BPD officers responded to a call about a domestic violence incident shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday on the south side of the city, Chief Thurmond said at a news conference.
“A female had been assaulted and the male suspect had a firearm on him,” acting BPD Chief Scott Thurmond told reporters.
When police arrived on the scene, they began to search for the fanned out to look for the suspect. An officer approached the suspect on the 2500 block of 7th Ave South, the chief said. The officer, who was alone, observed that the suspect had a firearm.
“The officer gave the suspect verbal commands to put the firearm down. at that point, the suspect picked up the firearm and the officer discharged his firearm at the suspect.”
The suspect was shot in the leg and was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Thurmond said. The suspect’s weapon was recovered, he added.
The officer involved in the shooting was not identified. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will investigate the incident.
