TRUSSVILLE — It was the kind of victory any team would want on senior night. Hewitt-Trussville beat Gadsden City 5-0 in a fairly easy contest that saw the Huskies honor their leaders in a short ceremony after the game.
Jocelyn Davis got the scoring started with an assist from Julia Farris — one of those seniors — with around four minutes gone in the first half of the match. That opened the floodgates for the Huskies. Farris would score twice herself during the game, once assisted by Taylor Doss.
Avery Huffstutler assisted Doss, and Libby Armstrong went solo to cap the scoring for the Huskies.
This senior class is special, Huskies head coach Lauren Wooten said.
“The impact they’ve had on this program has been huge,” Wooten said after the win. “Coming in they were sophomores and immediately they were leading. They’ve taken over workouts. They’ve actually created a lot of the workouts. Vocally as leaders they really step up, but more importantly, emotionally they’re supporting the team and encouraging the teams. Being the team moms, as I like to say. It’s been really fun to watch them grow as leaders and people over the last three years.”
For Huffstutler, working with her fellow seniors has been an amazing experience.
“It’s great to be around a great group of girls like this,” Huffstutler said. “I’ve been a part of this program for five years, and having Coach Wooten here has made our senior year very special.”
Huffstutler first stepped onto the pitch when she was in pre-K.
“I’ve been playing for about 14 years,” she said, laughing. “I guess my parents probably forced me to play when I was four.”
For Caitlyn Mosley, who’s been playing varsity soccer for three years, being a senior on this team has been rewarding.
“I would say we’re like a family,” Mosley said. “We’ve all been playing together for so long — like, the seniors have been playing together since we were about six years old — so just having that sense of family around us and knowing that we’re all supporting one another just builds a good working environment.”
