MOODY – The Master Gardeners of St. Claire County were honored at a meeting of the Moody City Council on February 28, where the council also agreed to use the $4 million from the sale of the Margaret sewer system for infrastructure improvements in the city.
Master Gardeners members Pam Garrison and Candace McElroy were present at the meeting where Mayor Joe Lee read a proclamation that praised the group for their efforts in landscaping the grounds at city hall and the police department building.
“The members of the St. Claire Master Gardeners have volunteered countless hours with the latest gardening techniques and to inform others about the benefits of gardening,” Lee read. “As well as spearheading numerous special projects to benefit not only the city of Moody but the surrounding areas of the county.”
Lee also presented a plaque crediting the group to be put on the city hall building.
The council then heard from Oh Sherri Pub owner Joel Wallace, who asked for permission to host a St. Patrick’s Day event on March 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at his establishment. He said that the event would feature vendors, music, and food from a crawfish boil to raise funds for the local soccer board.
Wallace’s request was approved unanimously.
The council later approved two general obligation warrant resolutions, one of which refunded a fire ladder truck expense last year. The second refunded the 2014-A warrants and amended the 2021 ordinance.
Regarding the second ordinance, Brad Cherry from Maynard, Cooper, and Gail Law Firm said that the city passed an ordinance to refund their 2014 warrants through a public bond issue last year. The amendment now places it directly with Capital One as a bank-placed bond issue.
Cherry said that the savings from this will reimburse the city $600,000 from purchasing the fire truck. Both ordinances were approved unanimously.
At a previous meeting, the council voted to sell the Margaret sewer system owned by Margaret and Argo. During last night’s meeting, Lee requested that the city set aside the totality of the net proceeds from the sale in a separate deposit account, which is $4 million.
The proceeds would then be used for the Moody sewer plant, as well as “other capital improvements” of the city. It is expected that the funds will be expended within two years.
In other business, the council:
- Approved Parks and Recreation Director Mike Staggs’ request to renew annual RecDesk subscription, Vendor: RecDesk for $4,400,
- Approved Police Chief Thomas Hunt’s Request to repair car#357 alternator for $340,
- Approved Hunt’s request to reimburse a golf cart trailer to Moody Police Department for $3,500,
- Approved Fire Chief Larry Horton’s request to purchase uniform items for $285,
- Approved Horton’s request to purchase uniforms for $2,300,
- Approved Horton’s request to purchase and convert the halogen headlights on E-1 and E-2 for $300, and
- Approved Horton’s request to purchase two Hydrant Gate Valves for $800.
Meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of every month at 6 p.m. at Moody City Hall on 670 Park Ave.
