BIRMINGHAM — Nalin Reed, a 10th-grade Trussville resident who attends the Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) in the theatre arts department, was chosen as a Finalist in the 2022 National YoungArts Foundation competition.
YoungArts is the most prestigious arts competition for 10th-12th graders in the United States. Reed won in the Theater category. He is one of only 18 students nationwide to be named a Theater Finalist. Alabama School of Fine Arts has two of the 18 Theater finalists.
The finalist award recognizes work that demonstrates exceptional technique; a strong, sophisticated, nuanced, and clear artistic point of view; and a depth of thinking/performance that far exceeds the level of peers at this career stage.
YoungArts identifies and nurtures the most accomplished young artists in the visual, literary, design and performing arts and assists them at critical junctures in their educational and professional development.
YoungArts award winners at the Finalist level are invited to participate in National YoungArts Week + in January 2022 featuring virtual classes, workshops and mentorship from leading artists in their fields as well as virtual performances and an exhibition for the public.
Finalists are also eligible to be nominated to become U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts, one of the highest honors given to high school seniors, bestowed by the President of the United States. As the sole nominating agency, every year YoungArts nominates 60 artists to the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. The Commission then selects the 20 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts.
