BIRMINGHAM — Jefferson County Emergency Management officials announced Sunday, January 1, 2022, that they would open storm shelters around the county ahead of potential bad weather headed east from Mississippi.
All storm shelters in Fultondale are open now, as well as storm shelters in Adamsville and Bagley. Other shelters may be open. Large parts of western and central Alabama — including the Birmingham metro area — are under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. according to the National Weather Service.
Reports have a tornado moving toward Columbus, Mississippi from the southwest around 5:40 p.m. The storms are moving along with a cold front that will likely drop temperatures overnight.
