MONTGOMERY — According to the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Alabama Hospital Association, Covid related hospitalizations are dropping in Alabama.
The most recent increase in cases peaked on Sept. 1 with 2,890 people hospitalized. In less than two weeks, hospital cases have steadily declined by 15 percent to 2,463 on Sunday, Sept. 12. Hospitalizations never reached the peak of 3,070 seen in January of 2021 surge of Covid cases.
According to the AHA, there were 2,421 adults hospitalized on Sunday and 42 pediatric patients in hospitals statewide. There are 1,541 patients in ICU beds, which exceeds the capacity of 1,530 ICU beds. Approximately 48% of the ICU beds are occupied by Covid patients.
Of those hospitalized with Covid, 13% are fully vaccinated, 4 percent are partially vaccinated, and 83 percent are unvaccinated.
An increase in Alabamians receiving the vaccine since July means approximately half of those older than 12 have been at least partially vaccinated.
