CENTER POINT — Details from the 2020 U.S. Census are revealing trends in local cities.
Center Point has a population estimate of 16,110, showing a 4.6% decrease since the 2010 census.
The median value of owner-occupied homes in the city is well below the national median. In Center Point, the median value of homes is $97,800, and nationwide, the median is $217,500.
The percentage of high school graduates, among ages 25 years and up, who lived in the city from 2015 – 2019 was above the national percentage. For Center Point, that percentage was 88.7%, while the national percentage was 88%.
Women-owned and minority-owned businesses dominated in 2012. Of the businesses, 548 were owned by women while men owned 436 businesses in the city. There were 710 minority-owned businesses while 279 businesses were non-minority-owned.
The census showed that 26.3% of the population of Center Point is living in poverty. That compares to a national percentage of 10.5%.
To determine poverty, the Census Bureau followed the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) Statistical Policy Directive 14. It uses a set of money income thresholds that vary by family size and composition to determine who is in poverty. If a family’s total income is less than the family’s threshold, then that family and every individual in it is considered in poverty. The official poverty thresholds do not vary geographically, but they are updated for inflation using Consumer Price Index (CPI-U). The official poverty definition uses money income before taxes and does not include capital gains or noncash benefits (such as public housing, Medicaid, and food stamps).
Here is a look at the demographics of the city of Center Point compared to the demographics nationwide.
