BIRMINGHAM — Major improvements are getting underway at Huffman Middle School.
On Wednesday, July 21, officials broke ground on a new gym and cafeteria at the school.
Principal Genita Matthews said the cafeteria will be renovated and extended. The gymnasium will be built from the ground up. Matthews said she hopes the new structure will be used to host more events and competitions at the school.
The target date for the completion of the project is sometime in 2022.
Huffman Middle School is located at 517 Huffman Road, in east Birmingham. It was first established as Oak Grove Academy in 1878. The current structure was built in 1958, four years after the school joined the Birmingham City School system.
